Dr Michael Shiu is an Ophthalmologist specialising in the treatment of general eye disease including cataract, refractive laser surgery, and macular degeneration.
He also is extensively trained in the medical, laser and surgical management in glaucoma.
He has demonstrated a consistent history of academic and clinical excellence from obtaining the highest state grades for secondary education in South Australia and Northern Territory in 1990 to receiving first class honours in medicine at the University of Melbourne where he also won multiple awards including the 1996 RACP Prize in Clinical Medicine, the highest award from the Royal Australian College of Physicians.
Michael commenced fellowship training in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and became the Glaucoma fellow at the same institute. Currently, he is a staff specialist in the Glaucoma Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
Michael has also been an examiner at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and is involved in providing training and lecturing for the Australian College of Optometry.
Michael is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Australian and New Zealand Glaucoma Interest Group.
Michael also has strong interests in developing world ophthalmology and frequently contributes to overseas voluntary eye surgery programs like Vietnam Vision Project and Eye for Africa.
He currently has practices in Brighton, East Melbourne, Essendon, and Bendigo.
Michael’s strong communication skills are further enhanced through his command of fluent spoken and written Cantonese and Mandarin.
